Personal Biography

On August 1, 1989 I Steven Peter Wright was born at Rahway Hospital in New Jersey. From this I did not venture far from the hospital I grew up three towns over in Roselle Park, New Jersey. A very small town which is only one square mile. In Roselle Park I was raised by my mother Donna Wright who is a United States Postal Employee and my father John Wright who is a firefighter. I was my parent’s third and youngest child with two older brothers ahead of me. The oldest one John Wright Jr. who has just finished his service in the Army, the middle child Eric Wright also enlisted in the Army now is stationed in Kentucky. As a young child I always played a sport. I started out as a pop warner football player where I played as a linemen. Pop warner was a rough time because I was bigger than everyone in my grade, so I was bumped up to the older teams due to my size. This was a great year for me because I became captain in my last year of pop warner on the midget team. Along with football I wrestled in the winters, I was not the greatest wrestler early on. Year after year I wrestled on the B team. I also played some baseball as a young kid. I was an ok ball player, basically the kid the coach stuck in right field just so I would get some playing time. As I reached high school I stuck with football and kept my captain ship on the JV football team. By my sophomore year of high school I was on every special team. My junior year I made the Varsity team as the starting right guard and remained on special teams. My senior year I moved over to center and was trying to some time on defense. I was not a starter on defense. I never really got a chance to play defense unless out team was blowing another team out that rarely happened. During our teams constellation game we were up by a great margin and the coach put me in as defensive end. I was so excited to finally get on defense on the first play the quarter back scrambled away from me the n he cut back and I got my first sack. That was my greatest accomplishment in football. In high school I continued to wrestle my first two years I was on the JV team and was fine with that. As my junior year came I wrestled off for the Varsity spot at 171 and lost. I remained on JV and became the JV captain. I became really good this year and won all three JV tournaments at 171. As my senior year came I planned on wrestling 189 on Varsity, but the coach spoke to me about an open spot at Heavy Weight. I decide it would be best for the team if I bumped up to heavy weight and that is what I did. Being out weighed every match I gave it my all and ended up with a winning record. In high school baseball was not my sport. I went out for the team my freshman year and was cut by the coach. I was a little upset that he cut me, but this gave me a great opportunity to go to the weight room. I gained a lot of strength in the spring which in the end helped me with football and wrestling. With these sports I have other hobbies which include playing badminton. I love the game of badminton, but it is a difficult sport to find people to play with me. I look forward to every summer when my dad, brothers, and I compete for the badminton title. I have won the title the past three years and plan to retain it next summer.
My coaching experience started as a volunteer at the West Virginia Mountaineer Football camp this past summer. I worked with the tight ends and gained knowledge from the WVU coaches. With this I got the opportunity to work at a Middle School Football Summer Camp at Suncrest Middle School. Here I worked with tight ends and offensive linemen. Volunteering at this camp opened the door for me to do an internship with the Suncrest football team this past fall. I worked with the offensive line and helped with special teams. I plan to run the summer camp this summer and work with their football team again next year. Right now I am doing another intern ship with wrestling at Mountaineer Middle School. Here I am working with the heavy weight wrestlers. My goals as a coach are to become a special teams coach at the college level and eventually lead up to a head coach of college football. To achieve this goal I plan on attending graduate school.

Coaching Philosophy

As my coaching career continues to grow, my philosophy continues to develop as well. As a coach I believe that having the right amount of knowledge in the sport that you are coaching is very valuable. Knowing the rules is great but having the ability to apply the rules to the sport is extremely important. Also having the knowledge on how to teach key sport skills. Having the ability to apply the skill to each individual on the team no matter the skill level of the athletes. Learning from experience is a major part of my philosophy. Coaching season after season, thus taking knowledge from each year gives an opportunity to learn from yourself and the athletes. Learning from the athletes is the best knowledge in my view that a coach can get. Learning what works and what does not work with the athletes can help me build a better philosophy. Taking knowledge from my experiences is what starts off my coaching philosophy.

The next part of my coaching philosophy is time management. As a coach I value the importance of time. The major marker of time management is arriving on time to all sport program events. This goes hand and hand with commitment. As a coach I believe when an athlete participates in a sport they make a commitment to the coaches, team, and themselves.. Making a commitment to a team is a great part of my coaching philosophy. With commitment as a coach I must show good leadership skills. To make my coaching philosophy work the coach needs to lead by example. Not only do the athletes have to be on time and have that certain commitment, the coach must follow their philosophy as well. A coach has to be able to influence a team to work together to achieve goals. As a leader a coach must be able to handle and situations that may interfere with the teams goals. Having a positive attitude to accomplish any tasks that lie ahead for the team shows great leadership. As a coach I value a great leader who will go the distance to help their team succeed.

The last part of my philosophy is communication. To be part of a team you must be able to communicate with teammates, parents, and coaches. Understanding that an athlete can approach me with any concerns and that I will be able help them as best as possible with great communication skills. Being able to communicate with any athlete on a team is essential in building a great team environment. Along with communicating with athletes, communicating is with the coaching staff is extremely valuable to my philosophy. This is why I believe communication brings my whole coaching philosophy together.
